Auckland– C’era molta attesa per l’incontro tra Grant Dalton di ETNZ e i soci del Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron avvenuto martedì sera ad Auckland. Modi cortesi e dibattito aperto tra sailing team e club formalmente detentore dell’America’s Cup, ma la sensazione riportata dai media e dagli osservatori è che difficilmente la 37th America’s Cup si svolgerà in Nuova Zelanda.
Nel report del New Zealand Herald si legge che l’annuncio della sede sarà fatto il 17 settembre prossimo, mentre al 17 novembre saranno rinviati gli annunci sulla barca, ovvero le modifiche alla stazza AC75 che tanto successo ha avuto nella scorsa Coppa.
Grant Dalton ha spiegato come le trattative con il Governo di Wellington proseguano ma che le posizioni sono di stallo dopo che ETNZ ha ritenuto insufficiente l’offerta di 100 milioni di dollari neozelandesi, che solo in parte andrebbero al team mentre per la maggior parte verrebbero spesi in infrastrutture e logistica per organizzare la Coppa.
Grant Dalton ha detto con enfasi che “Tutti dobbiamo calmarci adesso. Questo non è un annuncio. Questo è un briefing. La Coppa non se ne è andata”.
Le trattative con il Governo e la città di Auckloand si concludono giovedì 17 giugno.
Secondo quanto risulta a Fare Vela, poi, il sailing team vedrebbe nell’accettare un’offerta da una sede estera l’unico modo per evitare una diaspora di velisti kiwi, come successe nel 2003 quando Russell Coutts, Brad Butterworth e molti altri andarono a rinforzare Alinghi di Ernesto Bertarelli.
“Lo scopo di Team New Zealand è di vincere la Coppa, di mantenere la Coppa per la Nuova Zelanda, a prescindere di dove essa si disputi e il Team continuerà comunque a chiamarsi TNZL”, ha specificato Dalton.
Una Coppa nel Solent o a Doha, per citare le due ipotesi più forti, consentitebbe a ETNZ di avere i fondi sufficienti per una nuova difesa.
A breve è atteso un annuncio congiunto del Governo neozelandese e del sailing team sullo stato delle trattative, ma la sensazione è che a oggi difficilmente la 37th AC sarà in Nuova Zelanda.
Ben 400 membri del RNZYS erano presenti all’incontro con Grant Dalton. Tra questi anche il giovane commodoro Aaron Young che è sembrato più conciliante e ha supportato Dalton specificando che “Ci potremmo trovare in uno scenario in cui una difesa all’estero sarebbe l’unica opzione”. Ovviamente ampi settori del RNZYS spingono invece per una nuova difesa ad Auckland.
Aggiornamento Oggi mercoledì il RNZYS e TNZL hanno inviato questo comunicato congiunto, in cui si specifica come “Un accordo con le agenzie neozelandesi interessate non è stato raggiunto e adesso si inizieranno trattative con sedi estere per ospitare la 37th AC. Ciò non esclude che la Coppa possa comunque essere ospitata in Nuova Zelanda, ma che una Coppa all’estero potrebbe essere il modo migliore per garantire i fondi per una difesa vincente della Coppa, unico motivo per cui esiste ETNZ”.

Emirates Team New Zealand (ETNZ) representing the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron (RNZYS) and the Government, along with Auckland Council, have concluded exclusive discussions regarding funding for the next America’s Cup (AC37) following ETNZ’s successful defence in Auckland of the 36th America’s Cup in March this year.
During the three-month exclusive negotiating period between New Zealand agencies and ETNZ, they have not been able to reach a conclusion that works for all parties. All three parties have worked through these discussions with the best of intentions to see the AC37 hosted in Auckland, and they have not been able to reach agreement by the expiration of the exclusive period.
Emirates Team New Zealand will now commence discussions with other nations to look into options regarding hosting AC37 events.
“By all means, the end of the exclusive negotiation period does not eliminate all possibility of the event or an event being hosted in New Zealand. If resources enable an event in New Zealand we will remain open to it. But, we must explore other opportunities to ensure we can put up another successful defence. No matter where in the world we are, we will always be Team New Zealand. Our priority has always been to keep and defend the America’s Cup successfully. We certainly want to explore holding a regatta in Auckland and along with discussing the venue for AC37 with other nations, would like to work through that opportunity also”, said Grant Dalton.
RNZYS Commodore Aaron Young said “Whilst we also remain hopeful that the cup can stay in New Zealand it would be prudent to now explore other options as well, with the primary objective to ensure we keep the America’s Cup trophy in the cabinet here at the club. As such we also understand the need to help ensure the viability of Emirates Team New Zealand so we have every opportunity to defend the America’s Cup again, wherever that may be. It would be an unprecedented achievement to win the America’s Cup three times in a row and taking the cup overseas may well offer the best chance for us to do so. At a meeting last night members were presented with this option and I believe generally understood this might need to happen.”
